There are four types of steroids. They are all used for different purposes and in different ways. However, they are also all classified into two main categories - anabolic and catabolic steroids. Anabolic steroids are used to gain muscle mass quickly, i.e. to build muscle mass for a competition or event.
Bodybuilders who use steroids for increased energy and muscle mass may experience impaired fertility and reduced testicular size. Some of these steroids also have severe side effects such as renal failure, cataracts, osteoporosis, depression, psychosis, liver failure, liver cell carcinoma and kidney failure. A study conducted in Russia revealed that steroid abusers have increased risks of premature death. Long-term use of anabolic steroids may lead to severe liver damage and cancers.
Catabolic steroids, on the other hand, are used to decrease the rate of muscle growth during a workout. They also increase your metabolism to help you gain muscle mass. Anabolic steroids increase your energy levels and concentration levels. They also enhance your physical strength. They increase your ability to recover from injury easily. And lastly, they increase your body's ability to store more nitrogen.
