David Henry II was a football star, a reliever for the New York Yankees and then a coach for the university at East Carolina. In his brief professional career he became known as "the Russian Rocket" because of his fastball, which peaked at 97 mph. The Rocket became a one of the greatest pitchers of all time for a reason, he used steroids heavily and it worked.
David Henry is in a familiar position, many athletes have used steroids, but none has come out and said they are sorry. This could change tomorrow but right now they will not face consequences. Some of these athletes use steroids to increase their athletic performance. Others use them to build muscle mass. Still others do not know the dangers and do steroids just to be able to compete.
David Henry is in a unique situation. He was never disciplined for using steroids. He accepted his role as a football coach at ECU despite the NCAA releasing a report saying that he was using steroids. He even signed autographs for players using steroids. He continues to work at ECU and coaches the team. In fact, he is so successful that the school is considering making him the next coach.
Unfortunately for David Henry and other college athletes today, this is not an isolated incident. steroids are used by many college athletes in much the same way as athletes in professional sports. The problem with steroid use at college is that there are no real controls on the amount or types of steroids that can be used or that athletes can use in order to gain an advantage. Sports supplements containing steroids are legal almost everywhere in the world and even promoted by many sports celebrities.
Athletes use steroids because they think it helps build muscle mass quickly. While some do believe this, the use of steroids has been linked to cancer. Other athletes use steroids to stay in peak shape. These athletes feel like they need to use steroids in order to perform at their best. There are also many who do not have the ability to gain weight with food alone and steroids help. So they feel that they need to use steroids to increase their muscle mass.
Unfortunately, there are many athletes in the NFL and college football that are involved in scandals where they were caught using steroids. Many times these athletes receive jail time or long sentences for their crimes. The stigma of having steroids makes them afraid to try their hardest. It is a vicious cycle where those players are punished for using illegal drugs but at the same time make no real changes to their lifestyles. Steroid abusers often go on to suffer from serious health problems including heart attacks and diabetes.
David Henry is one of the many athletes who have been in trouble for using steroids. He served a two-year sentence for selling steroids and received a three-year sentence. Unfortunately, for David and many others, the repercussions of steroid use does not just stop with the athletes. Many who become addicted to steroids will face many years of health problems that they would not have faced if they did not use them.
There are ways in which an individual can overcome this problem though. Doctors and therapists are constantly working to come up with new ways in which to treat addicts to steroids. It is also possible for an individual to seek counseling so that they can work towards recovery without the use of illegal steroids. As you can see, there are plenty of options when it comes to quitting steroids but no matter what avenue an individual takes, there is no reason why they cannot lead a normal life and live in a healthy and productive manner. Do yourself a favor and research all of your options.
