Mark Dugdale is known as a champion bodybuilder and as such, he speaks out against the use of steroids. In fact, he even went so far as to challenge the use of steroids by Olympic athletes during the Sydney 2020 Olympics. However, does Mark Dugdale's stance actually stand up to scrutiny?
Well, to begin with, Mark's statement is correct. Using steroids while engaged in bodybuilding is not the answer if you are trying to achieve peak performance in sports. The same can be said for any competitive sport in general. If you are running away from your past, dealing with it in secret or otherwise, using steroids is certainly not the way to go.
However, there is a lot of truth to what Mark says regarding the impact of steroids on athletes. Of course, in the case of the athletes who can prove that using steroids has impacted upon their career and/or future, there is no need to speak out against them. However, as soon as we get involved with athletes in other sports that have not reached the point where there is a valid question to whether or not their participation in competitive sports would have been harmful without the use of steroids, we enter a whole new realm of questioning. I'm sure you've heard the old adage about "what doesn't kill me, makes me stronger," or something similar.
So, let's take a look at what Mark Dugdale is saying there. Specifically, he's stating, "Steroids have become a part of sports medicine over the last few decades." He further states that there is "no clear cut evidence" linking steroids to a shortened career and/or increased winning percentage. That is pretty convincing argument, don't you think? After all, how else could a doctor make such a statement without even studying the issue itself?
There are two major problems with this statement. First, Mark seems to be arguing that the use of steroids has become an accepted part of sports medicine, which is a definite fact. However, the medical community has been debating this for quite some time, and the current state of the evidence is that steroids are not necessary to enhance one's athletic performance. Additionally, there is no definitive answer as to whether or not steroid use would decrease one's earning potential, as Mark points out in his statement.
The second problem with this statement is that it completely contradicts itself. Because if there were an increase in winning percentages, an increase in earnings, and an increase in popularity, then wouldn't those things be worth the use of an illegal steroid? Therefore, if Mark Dugdale was right, then there is absolutely no need to use steroids!
In addition, there is a reason as to why the FDA has made it illegal to sell steroid prescriptions to people over the counter. Those prescriptions would be illegally obtained, and therefore, could be very easily abused by professional athletes, college athletes, and even everyday people. This is due to the fact that the ingredients contained in these kinds of drugs are very powerful, and extremely addictive. As such, even if an athlete or college athlete was abusing Steriods, it would certainly still have serious consequences for them, even if it was within the rules.
Mark's statement is quite simply false. It is unfortunate that someone who has dedicated their career to helping athletes and other professionals to improve their game has chosen to go against what he represents. Even if there are valid reasons as to why a professional should use steroids, Mark's statements are both irresponsible and harmful. Therefore, I would encourage any person who is reading this article to avoid being involved with anyone who is either misinforming themselves about steroids, or who is thinking of getting into such a situation. Please remember that steroids can be very dangerous.
