IFBB and steroids; is that a possible relationship? That is one of many questions asked by many bodybuilders, fitness experts and bodybuilders who seek information about whether or not to use steroids during their training. The truth is, there are many bodybuilders who do use steroids during their training and some do grow big. What the steroid does is help enhance and improve the functioning of theabolic hormones in the body and in turn help create leaner muscle mass. However, I am sure that many professional bodybuilders and other athletes do not engage in such activity.
Darrem Charles, a professional bodybuilder and winner of the Mr. Universe title in 1996 has been in the news quite a bit recently due to his participation in the steroid scene. In fact, many reporters have come out to interview him in an attempt to get an explanation on why he did it and how he justified it. So, it is safe to say that Charles had a legitimate reason for taking steroids. Unfortunately, many of the questions about his activities, as well as why professional bodybuilders as well as non-professional athletes partake in such behavior, remain unanswered.
The question of steroid usage in the professional sports landscape should be addressed before people wonder about another guy with a naturally huge, muscular physique, participating in a steroid competition. Most guys that take steroids do so in order to increase their physical performance. They know plenty about what they are doing and most of them are able to justify to themselves that it is for the greater good of their body. If this statement were true, why wouldn't every body builder use steroids? They would make much more money and be happier in general. I don't know plenty of guys who didn't originally start using steroids because of a desire for a bigger penis or a leaner body.
So, how did Mr. America get all of this attention after allegedly using steroids in the midst of a Mr. Universe contest? Well, some have speculated that he may have gotten the idea from bodybuilding icon Arnold Schwarzenegger. In fact, Mr. Schwarzenegger has admitted to using them. However, I have never actually seen Arnold use steroids. So who is to say whether Darrem Charles' story is true?
Many guys who are concerned about steroid use in sports have formed gyms around the sport in order to help keep guys in shape. Many of these gyms have stringent rules about steroids. Many of the guys who run these particular gyms have seen the huge increase in cheating and steroid use in the sports world over the past decade. Some have even been threatened by national power lifting associations with sanctions if they don't tighten up their rules. So, it's not as if the entire population is joining these power lifting clubs just because of a love of bodybuilders.
One reason the story has gotten so much attention could be because it's an inside story. Many people who have been involved in bodybuilding for many years, including Mr. Olympia Rich Pederson, do not like to admit that there are people who are willing to take advantage of the sport for their own gain. When Darrem Charles took to the stage at the IFBB pro show to announce that he was going to try and enter the professional world after his recent appearance on the cover of Muscle Beach, many people were astonished not only by his appearance but also by the fact that he'd gone from a skinny, average bodybuilder to a champion bodybuilder in relatively short time.
But it goes beyond that. Many experts in bodybuilding believe that Mr. Olympia Charles would have never become an all-time champion had he not entered into the scene in the first place by using performance enhancing drugs. Some experts go as far as to say that steroids ruined Darrem Charles' chances of becoming a top bodybuilder. In fact, one of the reasons why he ended up taking steroids is because he had no other choice, with his already impressive physique, and he was desperate to build some more muscle.
There's no question that steroid use does affect a bodybuilder's ability to achieve his goals, both physically and emotionally. It's also true that the use of steroids is widely considered an embarrassment for many bodybuilders. The great thing is that with today's information, it's possible to judge whether or not someone is using steroids. If they're making their moves in a gym or even lifting weights, it's easy to see the damage steroids can have on the body, and the potential long-term effects. By keeping an eye out for these signs, and reporting them to proper authorities (such as local law enforcement), it's possible for the general public to make a positive impact on the world of bodybuilding and keep steroid use illegal.
