The New York Jets did not have a great off season, but that is not because they did not want to sign any players. They found a player that they thought would fit into their system perfectly and that player was Melvin Anthony. But just because he had a terrific year at the Combine and he was mentioned as a possible Super Bowl player does not mean that he is going to be ready for the Jets. There are many other factors that go into a good player being drafted and becoming a Pro Bowler. Let's take a look at some of the other things that are involved with having a successful career in the NFL.
We have all heard the stories about players coming out of college and busting their big chance to be the next big thing in the NFL. Well, that is exactly what happened with Melvin Anthony. He came out of a highly respected University and made it to the combine and was listed as a potential first round pick. But then he failed two drug tests and was out of the NFL draft.
That is all that really matters in the NFL draft. It is not the college degree that is so important because if a player has a great college degree they will get picked before players who do not have a degree. In fact, you may have a great college football team and one of your friends could be able to get picked up right away. But do you know what? You will not see that person in the NFL. That is because no matter how good a player is, if they do not stay out of trouble, they can never make it in the NFL.
Some players that come out of the University of Florida to become successful in the NFL. One such star is kicker Robbery's Johnathan Joseph. Before he went on to play for the Chicago Bears, he was arrested and served time in jail for cocaine possession and drug paraphernalia. Now it is hard to say that a guy who has served time for cocaine cannot make it in the National Football League. But do you think some of these other players who were involved with steroids and performance enhancing drugs are less likely to end up with substance-related crimes?
Of course some athletes that use steroids are less likely to be caught using them. Why? Well, because they are athletes and that is what they do. There is nothing wrong with being an athlete, as long as you do it ethically and with integrity. Unfortunately, there are people who want to take this pro sports lightly and they will bend the rules and break the law because they know the rules do not apply to them.
This does not mean that there are not athletes using steroids. It just means that some of them are more likely to be caught than others. In the recent steroid scandal in football, it was uncovered that several players had steroid prescriptions. The kicker was that they did not tell the doctor they were taking steroids. This is unethical and this is why so many players are getting arrested today for steroid offenses.
Many people forget that players can get prescriptions for painkillers as well. If a player has been injured and cannot perform on the field, they need to have something to help them through the difficult times. Many times this means illegal narcotics such as steroids. Of course, if they have a legitimate medical problem, then there is a chance they could be prescribed something else. This is why an audit needs to be conducted when new players are brought into the league.
Teams and players should both be held accountable for their actions. People should know the full extent of what is going on and this can only be accomplished by holding the accountable parties accountable. Whether it is a team or an individual, they should be held responsible for the use of performance enhancing drugs. If you know of anyone who is an athlete who is being investigated for steroids, please pass this information onto the police so they can keep track of it.
